"Johnny The Brave" is the first story in a new mini book series by author, Lana Fox. It is about a captured mermaid named Dessa who has been living in a display case at a museum for the past two years. She falls in love with Johnny, the museum worker who cleans the rocks in her tank. He is sensitive and big-hearted but is considered awkward to the other museum workers who often call him "useless" and taunt him about his partially-disfigured face. But Dessa doesn't view Johnny that way "I love Johnny because he is Johnny," she says.
In the mermaid world, touch is essential, not shameful, and nudity is celebrated. Fox answers the question we've all wondered about which is whether mermaids can actuallly have sex Indeed, they can, and with humans too, because their sex organs are located inside their tails, and they open up like the petals of a flower.
I loved this unique and touching story about Dessa and Johnny, and I'm excited for the rest of the upcoming series. Fox paints an underwater world that is synonymous with freedom and is a place more accepting of people like Johnny where "slowness is sacred like the murmur of the waves," a place decidedly different from our human world. I'm looking forward to reading more of the series and learning about what life is really like under the sea for our mermaid friends.
